Common Wine Faults Every Wine Lover Should Know

Understanding wine is not only about recognizing aromas, structure, and terroir—it is also about identifying when something is not quite right in the glass. Wine faults can occur at different stages of production, bottling, or storage. While some are rare, others are surprisingly common. Knowing how to recognize them allows wine lovers to distinguish between stylistic choices and true defects.

Cork Taint (TCA): The Most Infamous Wine Fault

Often referred to as “corked wine,” cork taint is caused by a compound known as TCA (2,4,6-trichloroanisole). This fault does not come from the wine itself, but from contaminated corks or cellar materials.

A wine affected by cork taint typically shows muted aromas, with unpleasant notes reminiscent of wet cardboard, damp cellar, or moldy newspaper. The fruit appears suppressed, and the finish is short and dull.
Even at very low levels, TCA can significantly compromise a wine’s quality.

Oxidation: When Wine Loses Its Freshness

Oxidation occurs when wine is exposed to excessive oxygen, either during winemaking or after opening. While controlled oxygen exposure can enhance complexity, uncontrolled oxidation is a fault.

Oxidized wines often display brownish hues, especially in white wines, and aromas of bruised apple, nuts, caramel, or sherry-like notes (when unintended). On the palate, the wine feels flat, lacking freshness and vibrancy.

Proper storage and correct closure systems are essential to prevent this common issue.

Reduction: Unpleasant Sulfur Notes

Reduction is the opposite of oxidation and occurs when wine is deprived of oxygen for too long. This fault can result in sulfur-related aromas, such as rotten egg, burnt rubber, or cabbage.

In some cases, mild reduction can disappear with aeration or decanting. However, if the aromas persist, the wine may be fundamentally compromised.

Volatile Acidity: When Vinegar Takes Over

Volatile acidity (VA) is caused by acetic acid and ethyl acetate, produced by bacteria during fermentation or storage. In small quantities, VA can add complexity, but excessive levels are considered a defect.

Wines with high VA smell of vinegar, nail polish remover, or solvent and can feel sharp and unbalanced on the palate, overpowering fruit and structure.

Brettanomyces: Fault or Style?

Brettanomyces, often called Brett, is a yeast that can develop in wine and produce aromas such as barnyard, leather, horse saddle, or medicinal notes.

Whether Brett is considered a fault or a stylistic element depends on its intensity. In excessive amounts, it masks terroir and fruit expression, making it widely regarded as a defect—especially in wines meant to showcase purity and elegance.
